Expect Moore…a note from our president

Wow!!! What fun the carnival was!!! Thank you so much to all of our wonderful volunteers. As I say every year, we can’t do it without you. Thank you to those of you that donated goods for our silent auction, candy, 2 litern bottles & snack cakes. This was by far the most successful carnival that Dodd has had in the past 3 years. I think the kids really loved it all, especially the outdoor activities!!

Dodd Dinner Night at Chiloso was a huge success. Thank you for supporting your Dodd PTA & our local restaurants. Look for information coming home soon about our next dinner night with Chick-Fil-A in early November. In early December we will be hosting another “Santa Shop”. Have your kids start saving their change. This is a wonderful opportunity for kids to focus on others (instead of themselves) during the Christmas Holiday season.

We will be kicking off our paper recycling contest on November 14. This year, EVERY elementary school in Wylie is going to participate. Please start saving all of that trash mail, holiday catalogs, school papers, etc…. and bring them to the yellow and green “Paper Retriever” bins in the back parking lot of the school. Let’s continue to show that Dodd is the “GREENEST”.
All spirit wear items have been delivered, unless you ordered a personalized sweatshirt or polo.

The personalized items should be delivered sometime this week or next. More order forms for all spirit wear will be going out sometime this month.

The holiday season is upon us. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
Sincerely,
Allison Moore
Dodd PTA President

Expect Moore…a note from our president

It has been a great start to the new school year. As always, your PTA is working hard to plan a fun filled year for our Dodd students, their families, and the Dodd staff. Our motto for this year is “bringing families and our school together”. There are so many ways that you can be involved with your child’s school, whether it’s during or after school hours. I encourage all of you to somehow get involved this year…..it is worth it!!

Our fall PTA membership drive was a huge success. The PTA has close to 240 members already. Thank you all so much for supporting your Dodd PTA. Congratulations to the following classrooms that won the PTA membership “ice cream scoop” contest: Kindergarten – Mrs. Kelley and Ms. Kirbo; 1st – Mrs. Howell; 2nd – Mrs. Mossbruger; 3rd – Mrs. Williams; 4th – Mrs. Bridges.

The Dodd PTA Fall Carnival & Silent Auction is right around the corner. Please save the date for Friday, October 23. This will be the “main” fundraiser again this year. The Wylie rodeo was rescheduled for this date also, so we are hoping that everyone will choose to support their school on Friday and go to the rodeo on Saturday. The carnival is going to be so much fun!!! We will be having a Halloween costume contest, petting zoo, dunking booth (weather permitting), pie throw, face painting, inflatables, fun games & prizes, and last but not least… yummy carnival food. Please get those volunteer forms and pre-paid bracelet forms turned in ASAP.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the new spirit wear items for this year (Dodd Rocks t-shirt, Dodd & Wylie sweatshirts, & hair bows/ribbons). If you didn’t get a chance to order, it’s not too late. Order forms will be coming home again with your child sometime in November.

I’m looking forward to a wonderful year. Remember …. alone we can accomplish a little, but together we can accomplish a lot!!!!

Sincerely,
Allison Moore
Dodd PTA President

From Texas PTA: New Laws Passed Regarding Teen Drivers and Child Booster Seat Usage

Parents need to be aware of recent new laws that go into effect September 1 regarding driving and child passenger safety!

• HB 339 prohibits teens under 18 from texting or talking on a cell phone while driving.
• HB 537 requires that everyone in the car, regardless of age and regardless of where they are sitting, needs to wear a seatbelt.
• HB 61 requires that all children younger than 8 years and less than four feet nine inches tall be in a child safety seat system.
Visit the legislative page of the Texas PTA Web site for a downloadable flier and more information.

Teen Drivers
Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers in America. Inexperience, driving while distracted by cell phone use and other teen passengers, and failure to wear seatbelts are all contributing factors.

Parents can help their teens become safer drivers by taking an active role. Supervise practice driving and be a good role model by practicing safe driving yourself. Remind teens of the new laws regarding cell phone use and texting while driving. Remind them that they and all passengers are required to wear seatbelts.

Booster Seats
Car crashes remain the number one killer of children ages 2-14 in the United States. The Safekids Buckle Up Campaign recommends the following safety tips:
• Use a booster seat correctly in a back seat every time your child rides in a car.
• Use a booster seat until your child weighs between 80 and 100 pounds, and is about 4 feet, 9 inches tall. For most children, that will be between ages 8 and 12.
• Tell all drivers who transport your child that booster seat use is a must when your child is in their vehicle.
• Booster seats are not installed the same way car seats are. They sit on the vehicle seat and are used to properly position the adult safety belt for an older child. Always use a lap and shoulder belt with a booster seat.
• Never place the shoulder belt under the child's arm or behind the child's back.
• Be sure all occupants wear safety belts correctly every time. Children learn from adult role models.

Staff Appreciation

Your funds are being put to good use. On Thursday, March 26, teachers stayed late for the Parent/Teacher Conferences and we provided dinner for them. Thank you so much for being such generous parents! The teachers were so thankful for the meal. A big thank you to Debra Meyer, her husband, Jonathan and Allison Moore for helping deliver the food to the classrooms. Thanks
again for always being willing to help!

ABITIBI: $$ for Your Paper!

Dodd is still in the lead with the paper recycling contest against Groves & Smith. The weights have
not been posted for the end of March yet, but Dodd has rocked the competition up until now. Groves & Smith will have to pull some enormous weights to take the lead from us. The contest ends officially April 3rd, but please don't stop recycling....let's all do our part in keeping our
earth beautiful.

A special thanks to the 4th grade Green Team led by Mrs. Boyd. They have worked hard every Friday to empty the recycle bins & prove that Dodd is the "greenest" school in WISD. Also, a special thanks to the parent volunteers that have assisted Mrs. Boyd throughout the year.

Reflections News…

WOW! We had an amazing response to our Reflections program for 2008-2009. Texas students, including Dodd, created more than 100,000 pieces of art, and nearly 2,100 of those entries advanced to the state-level of judging! Unfortunately, no entries from Dodd were chosen to advance to the national level. The theme for next year will be "Beauty is..." Start thinking now what this means to you and let's make next year just as great!
